The Nelson City Centre is incredibly small, a definite shock coming from Auckland. There is essentially one main street. As we had a 2-hour delay by the time we got to Nelson it was late 6pm and the town was near deserted aside from a few restaurants. We did a quick walk around before it fell dark to snap some photos and admire the historic architectural buildings. Everything was closed except a Farmers which was surprisingly open till 12am. We walked up to Christ Church Cathedral at the end of the street and then dined at Hopsgood along the little brick lane. Hopsgood is famously known as the best restaurant in Nelson. The restaurant was lovely. It had a relaxed atmosphere and was warm and inviting. Packed even on a Thursday evening the air filled up with quiet and happy banter. Everyone was so laid back and the staff were all very friendly. Food was also brilliant. Our favourites were the entree (Pulled pork croquette with chipotle mayo & apple salsa $5.50 each) and the dessert (Vanilla crème brûlée, new season cherries, rhubarb & hazelnut crisp $14.95). The mains were on the saltier side and the sauces that accompanied the dishes dried up very quickly. We had the Duck confit, duck sausage, golden kumara puree, grilled pears, hazelnuts & red wine ($36.50) and the Pure Angus beef fillet, wild mushroom gratin, parmesan polenta & pine nut salsa verde ($37.50).
